ABSTRACT

Transportation systems play a big role as an engine for urban transformation, significantly contributing to the shaping of the current and future city structure.

The importance of an exact public transportation system planning derives from the necessity to provide an efficient and effective service in response to the demand of mobility. However, the historical and cultural tradition conflicted with the transportation planning numerous times.

Such urban configurations often represent concrete issues for the Public Administration in the management of the necessary territory transformations.

The article focuses on such themes and on the city fo Bologna, analyzing its historic evolution through a brief history of its urban and transport plans to this day.

Finally, a specific in depth-analysis about a recent projet on creation of intermodal hubs linked with the city center, with the goal of providing an alternative to private transportation is presented.
