ABSTRACT

Numerous studies over the past decade have highlighted the electrospinning technique to be an ideal method for the fabrication of hybrid fibrous composites membrane, used for the effective removal of pollutants in water. It is also expected that surface functionalization of fibrous membranes will improve their performance as it optimizes the beneficial properties of individual components, thus reducing the inadequacy of nanofibrous composite materials. In this chapter, we will discuss the challenges around fibrous composite materials and describe some prominent examples of surface functionalized nanofibers and show how their design helps in enhancing the removal process of pollutants, with special focus on metal ions and organic dyes in polluted water.
