ABSTRACT

614For some time now, the extractives industry has been under scrutiny to improve its performance concerning impacts on biodiversity. This is due in part to a greater environmental awareness by society but also because the industry often operates in remote and environmentally sensitive parts of the world with high biodiversity values. The growing pressure from civil society and shareholders alike, has led to an increase in companies adopting and implementing specific standards to identify and mitigate impacts on biodiversity values. Many top-tier companies now have internal operating standards which are guided by good international industry practice, national legislation and increasingly influenced by exacting standards set by financial institutions.
