ABSTRACT

88The Chatree Gold Mine, Thailand’s first and only major gold mine, commenced operations in 2001. Operations were suspended in January 2015, following tests that found elevated levels of arsenic in samples of urine from local people. Of the 34 people whose urine was tested, 30% had arsenic concentrations of more than 50 μg/L, which is considered by US authorities as the upper limit of normal concentration. Three of the tested subjects had arsenic concentrations exceeding 100 μg/L, by which they could be categorised as ‘exposed persons’.
