128The goal of this chapter is to foster a better understanding of mining, from the initial prospecting to final mine closure, raising awareness of common mining methods as well as environmental, social, and economic issues associated with the mining industry. Specialized textbooks are available for those who might wish to study particular aspects in detail. Nevertheless, the discussion that follows will be most useful for those with some working knowledge of geology, mining, environmental and social sciences.
