ABSTRACT

Nanotechnology has emerged as a powerful strategy for the development of nanoparticles, with several biomedical applications for a range of diseases and infections, from diagnosis to therapy. In particular, the great impact of nanotechnology on human health is receiving considerable acknowledgment due to its rapid growth and advances in drug delivery systems, biomaterials, biomedical devices, intelligent processes, and many other areas of biomedicine and applied life sciences. This phenomenon is revolutionizing pharmaceutical sciences, and many drugs are being reconsidered for the treatment of many diseases by loading them in nanodelivery systems. The ability to manipulate physical, chemical, and biological properties of these nanosystems is also an important feature to provide a rational design of nanoparticles for drug delivery, for diagnostic purposes with image contrast agents, and for enhancing the current therapy. The chapter also presents an overview on the key concepts discussed in this book.
