ABSTRACT

The main focus of this chapter is to familiarize readers with the taxonomy and characteristics of various biting insects and ticks and to identify important allergens and salivary components implicated in bite reactions. Studies suggest that severe bite reactions occur about 50 times less commonly than severe insect sting reactions. Clinical reactions, including nonallergic responses, are usually species dependent. Biting insect control is more difficult in tropical regions of the world because of the number of insects that can bite humans. This chapter also discusses the safety, efficacy, and recommendations for the use of subcutaneous immunotherapy for systemic allergic reaction secondary to biting insects.
