ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The multimodal resources: linguistic, audio, visual, gestural and spatial are always complementary and overlapping. Multiliteracy pedagogy put forward by New London Group has expanded the traditional views of literacy to various multimedia forms. This study explores the development of multiliteracies in EFL teaching and learning in the digital era. By the application of descriptive-explanatory method, document analysis, and comparison, this paper introduces the benefits of multimodalities in TEFL from four aspects, and significance of multiliteracy pedagogy in EFL learning in seven areas. Then, it elaborates on the research about the methodology of developing multiliteracies for EFL learners. Six aspects of how to facilitate the implementation of multiliteracy pedagogy is discussed further. Finally, it concludes how educators incorporate the multiliteracy pedagogy focusing on critical reflection, empirical reasoning, collective intelligence, and metacognition to promote learners’ critical thinking and cross-cultural awareness in the digital era.
