ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Along with the increased emphasis on the 21st-century educational concepts comes the inevitable outdatedness of the traditional ‘chalk-and-talk’ instruction, and the growing popularity of integrating social networking sites into the teaching-learning process. The current article provides an in-depth discussion on the utility of Facebook in the modern English-as-a-Foreign-Language (EFL) classroom. Facebook has been recognized as a promising tool, with a broad array of user-friendly features, for language teachers to break out of the conventional classroom and provide EFL learners with more authentic teaching approaches, highly interactive environment and flexible timing. A number of certain difficulties may, however, possibly arise, concerning teachers’ capacity to integrate English learning tasks into this social virtual world, the informal nature of this website and students’ manner. In light of such opportunities and challenges, a number of pedagogical implications are offered to EFL teachers who wish to efficiently exploit Facebook to establish an English learning cyber-community.
