ABSTRACT

This paper reports a method for generation of hybrid grids for use in turbo machinery passages using fortran code. A mixture of hexahedral and tri-prism elements are obtained. The resulting mesh is then processed into the format compatible with OpenFoam (open Source CFD tool) which is capable of handling polyhedral elements. The work aims at generating good quality mesh for complex flow passages/geometries for a better under standing of flow features, especially the secondary flow structures. The following features were given prime importance while generating the mesh. Discretization of leading and trailing edge regions of the turbine blade, providing mesh grading at the regions of interest and suitable grid structure for imposing periodic boundary condition. Mesh generation around arbitrary geometries are discussed and finally simulation of flow around a cylindrical geometry is carried out using LES turbulence modeling and results compared with results of Escauriaza et al. [5].
