ABSTRACT

Public transportation intends to facilitate hassle-free travels with economy. Efficiency of public transportation system highly related to the quality of operation management. Reliability is the most significant term while quality of operation is in the frame. The reliability is as an attribute of a system that consistently produces the same result. A reliable service will obey the schedule designed by the organization. The unreliability such as additional waiting time, time irregularities at stops and missed connections will increases the apprehension and discomfort of passengers’. This is the main reason that generates other modes of transportation like individual car, two wheeler and para-transit systems. Reliability as a measure of quality of service is interrelated to the operational characteristics of the public transport system. The bus bunching is a situation in which two or more buses moving simultaneously so that their scheduled headways reduced or increased and the passengers waiting at upcoming bus stops enters in to the uncertainty mode. This paper analyzed the effect of bus bunching during the morning peak period of local public bus operation. The data collected for the analysis of bunching of the operation are scheduled departure time, actual departure time, scheduled arrival time, actual arrival time, number of passengers boarded and alighted and passenger wait time at stop. This study concentrated a stretch of 14 km route of national high way (NH 47) in Trivandrum district, Kerala, India.
