ABSTRACT

The elderly population in India constitutes 8.6% of the total population of the country. Kerala constitutes 12.6% of the total population, according to the 2011 census. The focus on the concepts in ageing and seniors’ strategy are different in different countries. The study incorporates ageing in place the concepts of ageing such as active ageing, healthy ageing and successful ageing. Analysis of the concepts in ageing was done by taking the common parameters relevant for planning. Secondary studies of seniors’ strategic plan of different countries were analyzed both at the city level and neighborhood level. The issues of elderly and major areas where planning interventions required were identified from the comparative analysis of case studies. The major areas in which the planning strategies required are identified as, housing, transportation, outdoor spaces, social participation, community support and health services.
