ABSTRACT

There is a need in the new urbanist world to incorporate innovative planning practices into the existing planning framework so as to banish the existing ironies between plan making and execution. Often, planning for the people never undergoes planning by the people for their own needs and aspirations. The case of Tactical Urbanism is one such initiative which can effectively bring about changes in the long run through small and scaleable beginnings. Being tactical is natural in every planning process, but identifying focus areas and instances for intervention are in the hands of each tactician, be it the urban planner, urban designer, architect, engineer or the politician. As a movement, however, Tactical Urbanism has not gained momentum in many parts of the developing world. The scope of integrating tactical interventions as a tool for effective spatial planning in India has been examined and few recommendations have been put forward for the same. This study has larger implications in the Indian planning scenario since the strong rural-urban continuum mingled with Jugaad planning systems is bringing about larger ironies in the name of effective planning.
