ABSTRACT

A market neighborhood is inter related of a large system rather than self-contained units. There is a great scope in these areas but as the city grows the district which once functioned as the major part of the city or a town gets deteriorated due to the urbanization, heavy traffic passing through, the congestion caused by them, but no significant measures are taken in Kerala to an extent to India for these market neighbourhoods. The historicity and character of many o market neighbourhoods in our country are getting lost and only limited measures have been taken to conserve and preserve these area. This paper attempts to project the importance, culture of these areas and how it can be revitalized and made as a part of the city with new development strategies. The research also analyses the various potential and issues of the market neighborhood Valiyangadi and strategies are proposed based on the existing and future potentials of the area on planning perspective.
