ABSTRACT

Happiness is something that we all aspire for, in our life and it can be considered as a tool for human development. Thus Happiness Index can be regarded as the measure of happiness and wellbeing. Viewed from this perspective, happiness is not merely a guidepost or inspiration but it becomes an organizing principle for governance and even policy-making. Significantly, the Gross National Happiness Index—a serious, thoughtful, and sustained attempt to measure happiness, – is the first of its kind in the world. These measurements, then, can be used to chart the course of public policy. The GNH Index is very much a living experiment, seeking to convey more colorfully the texture of people’s lives. It aims to evaluate sustainability, well-being and quality of life which are considered as a potential substitute for Gross Domestic Product. Thus the relevance of this concept lies in ensuring the wellbeing of people which can effectively boost up the overall development of our nation.
