ABSTRACT

Transit Oriented Development (TOD) is a means of bringing about a sustainable solution to the world’s major challenges like climate change, traffic congestion, increased pollution levels, haphazard urban growth and urban sprawl. Currently, the Indian Government has its two initiations on process, “Metro Policy” and “Green Urban Mobility Scheme”, apart from “National Transit Oriented Development Policy”, which will enable the country’s understanding on the topic and serve as a viable solution to these challenges (Indian express, 26th Feb, 2017).

The study began by understanding the genesis of TOD, its need and importance in today’s scenario, followed by literature case studies to understand the various issues and challenges faced by urban cities and extent of successful implementation around the world. It was then related to Kochi context of Kerala, India, to derive parameters favourable to the upcoming metro corridor and a quick appraisal on the 22 metro stations.
