ABSTRACT

High density urban development has changed the natural landscape into artificial constructions along with many environmental problems including pollutions, urban heat islands and climate changes affecting the public health. The application of climate knowledge into urban planning and development is thus necessary to eradicate such change. This study aims to determine the relationship between temperatures with the influential spatial elements of local climate for the study areas in Thiruvananthapuram district. The study areas were selected based on the varying land use and built cover characteristic existing in the city limit and was classified in to various Local Climate Zones (LCZ) considering the classification system put forth by Stewart and Oke. Measurements were taken for temperature, wind speed and humidity of the study areas and analysed. Statistical analysis was done using Minitab software to determine the relationship between temperature at noon with the influential spatial elements considered in the study.
