ABSTRACT

The warm, moist atmosphere of a brewery and the grain ingredients all contribute to the attractiveness of a brewery to pests. It is necessary to examine what can be changed to make the brewery less attractive to pests. This chapter looks at the types of pests that may be encountered in a brewery and a similar facility. Pest control starts with maintaining the brewery unattractive to pests and keeping physical barriers in place to prevent pests from entering the building. For those deciding on the location of a new facility, a number of factors should be considered in addition to the practical considerations of rail and highway access, quality and quantity of water, solid and liquid waste disposal, and flexible labor potential. Landscaping must enhance the image of the plant and its product, but minor changes in the landscaping can make a big difference in controlling pest problems.
