ABSTRACT

Nowadays, there are big culture collections that depend on drying methods for preserving their microorganisms. In addition, there are many industrial applications of microorganisms preserved in aliquots. Microbiological quality control is necessary in the pharmaceutical, food, and beverage industries. It is also evident in clinical microbiology, which is performed by using samples of microbial strains acting as positive controls. These strains are preserved through drying, which increases their stability for transportation at room temperature. Moreover, emerging elds such as the probiotic and biocontrol industries require the conservation of certain microorganisms (Garcia 2011; Morgan et al. 2006).
