ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at different approaches of making existing medical applications telehealth ready. The benefits of telehealth lie in using information and communication technologies to increase the reach of health services involving patients. Many of the developments in telehealth and mobile health are heavily based on using a digital medium to replace the traditional physical media of printouts and written records. In essence, telehealth aims to provide better health services than existing models by collecting relevant evidence and more data. Telehealth applications on the personal computer often use a Web-based interaction scenario with a browser or software program. Given that the hardware of the personal computer could easily be expanded, telehealth applications have also used different connectors to link peripheral devices to transfer or collect needed data. Enabling telehealth for existing medical needs allows in many cases the collection of more data which hopefully will provide physicians a better understanding of their patient.
