ABSTRACT

Welding activities are dangerous if safety program is not properly implemented. The operation can pose a physical threat to the operator if the operation procedure is not adhered to. Friction stir welding (FSW) was invented in the early 1990s at The Welding Institute, United Kingdom. The tool materials that are usually used for FSW of aluminum alloys are tool steels, which have a mixture of high-temperature strength and toughness. The primary purpose of welding components into the desired shape is to improve the properties of the parent materials. The intensity of radiation emanating from FSW is quite minimal compared to arc welding. However, radiations from both processes need to be shielded from getting in contact with the welder. A rotating equipment if not properly guarded or encapsulated can cause severe injuries to the operating personnel. This often occurred whenever the power supplied to the rotating machine is uncontrollable.
