ABSTRACT

Recently, the ecological effects of hydraulic projects have attracted worldwide attention. Structures such as spur dikes are effective for river regulation as well as a threat to river ecology. Therefore, in this paper, we discuss the application of spur dikes’ artificial wetland in river restoration projects. To study the effect of this ecological engineering on the emission of polluted sediments, laboratory experiments were carried out. The concentration field was measured under different conditions in the surrounding area of the project, including different vegetation and sediment inputs. The results indicated that the peak concentration decreased significantly due to the change in the flow velocity. The increase in the vegetation occupancy rate will lead to a transition of the concentration process from unimodal to multimodal. This will be very useful for the enhancement of water quality and pollutant decomposition.
