ABSTRACT

The vertical building, the typology of urban buildings that were products of industrialisation and were defined architectonically by modernism, evolved to become a key component of the complex mechanism known as the contemporary city. The architecture of these buildings is an ideal field for demonstrating the cultural and technological changes of the recent decades in the design process. The current international scenario points to the importance of the vertical building, as an image of modernity in cities and its role as an agent of urban qualification, either in the formation of the landscape and construction of public spaces or in the formation of identities. This article discusses the enduring contributions of the modernist project as a paradigm to the individualities of contemporary conceptions.
