ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a brief history and background on the excited states of carotenoids from which many of the spectroscopic and energy transfer properties of these molecules originate. The chapter describes the use of various optical spectroscopic approaches for elucidating the mechanisms of light harvesting and photoprotection, which are critical biological roles of carotenoids in photosynthesis.
