ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book highlights major trends and developments in the field of microbial fuels. It deals with applications to wastewater and the applications to solid waste. The book then focuses on the microbiology, biochemistry, and operating conditions in general. It also deals with municipal solid waste and agriculture waste, respectively, since both are the major current applications of anaerobic digestion at the industrial scale with relatively different operating conditions from each other. The book focuses on bacterial hydrogen (H2) production, also called dark fermentation. It also discusses the algal and bacterial photo fermentative H2 production. The book then deals with current and perspective tools to investigate, control, improve, and implement microbial fuel production in industrial sectors. It also analyzes the use and prospects for microbial fuels in developing countries.
