ABSTRACT

There are those who like to believe that artificial intelligence (AI) will never be a threat to humanity whatever the circumstances. In this chapter a look is taken at some of the ‘arguments’ raised which underpin such a belief. In particular the statements of Bundy, Searle, and Penrose are focussed on. An opposing argument is then made to explain the logical and sensible reasons which indicate that AI, as we deal with it, does in fact pose an ultimate threat for humanity. In terms of the safety of AI this teaches us critical lessons in terms of how to deal with and manage AI. In this chapter, the terms computers, machines, and robots are generally taken to be much the same sort of thing and no time is given up to detailed definitions to distinguish between them.
