ABSTRACT

Nanotechnology and nanomaterials have been utilized in many applications, including in the field of the environment. In some cases, large scale applications were already conducted. Nanomaterials are able to absorb, interact, and react with various organic pollutants and heavy metal contaminants in the soil and wastewater as well as gaseous emissions in the air. There are a couple of nanoscale materials that can be utilized for various environmental purposes, such as nano-sized zero valent ion (nZVI), graphene-based nanomaterial, metal-oxide, and others. Also, nanomaterials can be utilized for air pollution treatment and it has been commercialized, such as a three-way catalyst in diesel-fueled automobiles and alkali nanotubes for CO2 adsorption. Furthermore, the utilization of nanomaterials opens the possibility for fuel production from air pollution. In this chapter, potential utilization of nanomaterials will be discussed.
