ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we first provide a history of the criticisms leveraged towards automated essay scoring (AES) by organizations, academics, journalists, and concerned citizens and summarize key criticisms. We then discuss how professionals can communicate the abilities, uses, accuracies, and constraints of AES while acknowledging key criticisms. Finally, we discuss how automated feedback in formative assessments may help to resolve historical concerns. By better communicating about the pros and cons of AES in different use contexts, the profession can build trust with assessment stakeholders and the public to grow the use and impact of this powerful technology.
