ABSTRACT

Changes in people’s lifestyle due to industrialization has affected the nutrition quality of diets, currently richer in fats, sugars and energy, which contributes to the increase of obesity and other non-communicable chronic diseases world wide. The European Union has made efforts to make consumers more aware of their choices by providing more information on processed foods and new ways of facilitating consumer choices are being sought, such as the “nutritional traffic light system”. Nevertheless, this method has raised questions as to whether it can really guide consumers to make better food choices. The aim of this research is to combine design and nutrition science in order to create a new infographic to replace the current traffic light system, trying to promote transparency and the understanding of nutritional information. Preliminary results from our study indicate that the graphic label developed is simpler and clearer to perceive, allowing for better understanding of nutrition and food choices.
