ABSTRACT

B. Pilot Laboratory A well-designed pilot laboratory is essential to avoid problems of scale-up and also to provide a means for answering questions that often arise after the process has been operating smoothly for months or even years. Ideally, the pilot lab will have the same type of equipment but in a smaller size, capable of making batches in the 20-100 L range. In many cases, doing experimental or troubleshooting work in this range can be very expensive. However, many of the problems that might arise during scale-up or troubleshooting can never be solved if only small batches measured in milliliters are studied.
