ABSTRACT

In 1981 Paul lmbach et al. (1) first reported on the ability of intravenous immunoglobulin (MG) treatment to dramatically increase the platelet count of patients with immune thrombocytopenia. In that year in their initial article and one other (2), these investigators also reported that (1) IVIG was ineffective in aplastic thrombocytopenia; and (2) in one patient, IVIG was ineffective if digested (by pepsin) so that few lgG monomers remained, but the same patient then responded to infusion of a different preparation of IVIG containing "intact" IgG.
