ABSTRACT
Persons with type 1 diabetes are dependent on injected insulin to prevent hyperglycemia and ketosis and to preserve life. This diabetes type is characterized in its complete state by insulinopenia and virtually complete destruction of the beta cells, although there may be preketotic, non-insulin-dependent phases earlier in the natural history of the disease.
