ABSTRACT

This chapter will serve as a companion to the Chap. 10 on diabetes in children. The adolescent, while often seen as a child in the eyes of physicians who care for adults, has characteristics that make their management more similar to adults. It is true that as the child moves farther into the adolescent age range he or she wishes to be seen and treated more like an adult than like a child. This confusion in the way in which the adolescent patient is viewed by medical specialists mirrors very closely the conflict within the adolescent over how they see themselves. This chapter focuses on issues specific to the adolescent with diabetes.
