ABSTRACT

Insulin-dependent diabetes, or more specifically, type 1A, results from immune- mediated destruction of insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas. In this chapter we will review the autoimmune process and genetics of type 1A diabetes, followed by a discussion of the prediction and diagnosis of type 1A diabetes in both children and adults. We will also review associated autoimmune processes that should be considered when caring for a patient with this type of diabetes and ongoing trials for diabetes prevention.
