ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder caused by an absolute (type 1; previously called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus) or a relative (type 2; previously called non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus; and stress diabetes mellitus) lack of insulin. Because of the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and the comorbidity of the disease, most diabetologists will manage hospitalized diabetic patients receiving nutritional support. This chapter will review nutritional support and the importance of glucose control.
