ABSTRACT

Diabetes patient education has evolved to ' 'diabetes self-management education and training'' an integral component of diabetes care and treatment. The goal of diabetes self-management education is to enable the person with diabetes, through motivation to use knowledge and skills to become an active participant in their diabetes care and treatment. In fact, the clinical management of diabetes relies on the ability of a person with diabetes to make lifestyle changes to control his or her diabetes. Living well with diabetes requires a positive psychosocial adaptation to, and effective self-management skills of, the disease. Diabetes self- management education is associated with improved patient outcomes and reduces costs. The fundamental importance of diabetes skills and knowledge to care and treatment makes self-management education and training a cornerstone of diabetes management.
