Genetically defined mouse strains have become invaluable in biomedical research because of their ability to clarify genetic vs. environmental influences on a wide variety of traits including behavior. They have provided the means to test multiple genetically identical or nearly identical animals at one time, thus reducing the effects of genetic variation to a minimum. Some of the most useful types include inbred, co-isogenic, congenic, consomic, recombinant inbred, knockout, and transgenic strains.
