ABSTRACT
Many different materials were used as writing surfaces before paper was invented, such as rock, clay, bones, wood bark, leaves, bamboo, metal, silk, papyrus, and parchment. These substrates were not without problems associated with their use, including varying degrees of surface smoothness, expense, preservation, and storage requirements.
