ABSTRACT

On a wooded lot near the Tennessee River in Knoxville, Tennessee covering almost two acres, lies the Anthropology Research Facility (ARF), a unique laboratory that allows for research into human decomposition. e Anthropology Research Facility is part of the Forensic Anthropology Center (FAC) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. is facility was the brainchild of William M. Bass, then professor and head of anthropology at the University of Tennessee (UT). Bass had two reasons for attempting to establish this facility: a badly missed estimate concerning time since death and evidence security issues at what was then the existing holding facility.
