ABSTRACT

A radiological assessment was conducted in Kosovo in December 1999. It showed the importance of carrying out a radiological survey possible when deploying troops in territories under reconstruction, so that appropriate protective measures can be taken. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization used depleted uranium ammunition during the conflict in Kosovo to destroy the tanks of the Serbian Army and made it known in a letter sent to the United Nations Organization by Lord Robertson. From a scientific standpoint in regard to uranium, the database contains numerous studies and publications. It contains data on health risk, on the biological evolution of incorporated uranium, and on the laboratory techniques used in searching for uranium and identifying the isotopes of uranium. The analyses carried out in the field revealed very localized contamination by radium. Decontamination was easy because of the small area to be treated.
