ABSTRACT

In parallel with the technological advances, there exists a need to reduce the costs of healthcare. The traditional care provisioning process, where the patient is a passive object cared for by healthcare professionals, has been challenged. In response, a new, proactive care paradigm is being introduced in health management, including management of risk factors such as being overweight, prevention of diseases and poor health, care for chronic diseases, and support for independent living.1 In this model, the individual takes a more active role in the decision-making and management of his or her own health, while the health professionals step back into coachlike roles. Having individuals take more responsibility for the management of their health or illnesses allows a reduction in the workload of health professionals and provides an efficient opportunity for the prevention and management of diseases. This approach is especially suited for support by mHealth technologies.
