The objective of this chapter is to show the logical development of equations that explain and predict the movement of groundwater in two-and three-dimensions (2D and 3D) as observed in nature. Flow of groundwater is a special case of ﬂuid ﬂow in porous media, and is governed by the laws of physics, in particular the laws of ﬂuid mechanics. Fluid mechanics deals with the motion of ﬂuids and with the forces exerted on solid bodies in contact with ﬂuids. The fundamental principles are conservation of mass and conservation of momentum. It will be shown that these fundamental principles are sufﬁcient to explain groundwater ﬂow.
