ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the significant differences in perspective on usability between standards makers, designers, and users. A brief synopsis of the development of regulations, the Principles of Universal Design, usability measures, and testing techniques is presented, including context from case studies of businesses with experience in design for users with disabilities. Discussion focuses on tools and techniques for assuring that users have an active role in design development and that the resulting design is as usable as possible for as many people as possible. Two examples of these tools are featured in this chapter: personas for presenting user needs research and a user’s guide to selecting a cell phone.
