ABSTRACT

The chapter reports on the early development of the medical equipment device accessibility and universal design information tool (MED-AUDIT). The MED-AUDIT is a software-based assessment system that incorporates innovative measurement strategies to quantify and score the accessibility of medical devices by breaking down scoring categories into strategic measurement categories. The MED-AUDIT embeds three domains of measurement constructs (functional tasks, device features, and impairments) into two versions of the MED-AUDIT. One version targets use by accessibility/universal design experts and the other targets accessibility/universal design novices. Both demonstrate an ability to quantify accessibility. Studies to validate the instruments are underway to verify their reliability and validity.
