ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the potential for personalized interfaces for medical devices with a specific focus on home-based rehabilitation, which is an area of special need and opportunity. In particular, the focus is on innovative approaches for personalized access to Web-based services, designed in ways that enhance universal access. There are many opportunities for personalizing health care through emerging ubiquitous home environment technology, but there are also barriers to this vision. These are addressed, and possible solutions presented, including the new User Socket Interface/Universal Remote Console standard. An example technology infrastructure is reported, called UniTherapy by our group, that is intended to function as a personalized home rehabilitation appliance.
