ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the spectrum of the tasks in which electro-optical method could provide new information. The electrophysical methods for analysis of bioobjects, in general, and electro-optical methods, in particular, have a long history of evolution. The electro-optical method helps in obtaining unique information on structural, electrical polarization of the investigation objects that is inaccessible when using any other nondestructive method for cell analysis. The basic properties of bacterial cells as the objects of analysis are size, its comparable with wavelength of light, shape anisotropy, morphometric and electrophysics heterogeneity, and ability to rapidly change their properties depending on physicochemical parameters of the environment. The transfer of cells to the medium with low electroconductivity causes excessive osmotic pressure in them. The electro-optical method occupies a special place among the methods for rapid control of cell parameters. The electrophysical modeling of a cell helps in calculating complex dielectric parameters of cell structures on conditions that the restrictions for their range are considered.
