ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the method of performance optimization of multicarrier systems with forward error correction (FEC) and automatic repeat request (ARQ). It examines the performance gain that particular FEC/ARQ parameters will achieve in such a communications system with a discrete multitone (DMT) modulation scheme. DMT is a form of multicarrier modulation in which each carrier is assigned a number of bits depending on its own noise parameters. The essence of the method is reducing the evaluation of the performance of a typical multicarrier channel to the evaluation of the performance of a single quadrature amplitude modulation channel with the average parameters of all subchannels of that multicarrier channel. The error-controlling algorithm uses a combination of an FEC code and a cyclic redundancy check.
