ABSTRACT

Carbohydrate counting is one of several meal planning approaches that can be taught to and used by patients with diabetes. Carbohydrate counting has gained popularity in the U.S. in the last decade. It was used effectively in the intensively managed group in the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) to achieve glycemic control while allowing patients lifestyle flexibility [1]. It is also based on the principle that carbohydrate is the main nutrient that impacts postprandial blood glucose levels, and therefore the focus of the teaching is on the impact of only one nutrient [2,3].
