ABSTRACT
In the “pre-insulin” days, diabetes was virtually incompatible with successful pregnancy [1]. The prevailing notion that diabetes was “inconsistent with conception” eventually gave way, but for many years, pregnancies complicated by diabetes were very different from non-diabetic pregnancies. Pregnancies in diabetic women, whether the diabetes was pregestational or diagnosed during gestation, were still associated with significant maternal and fetal morbidity, mortality, and increased risks for complications [2].
