ABSTRACT
Transportation has always had been an international activity. From earliest times, merchants and traders were dealing across state boundaries. The ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Persian empires were all engaged in international trade. Subsequently, as Europe expanded outwards and created the colonial system, trade assumed a truly global dimension. In recent decades, however, this dimension has accelerated greatly. The level of international trade continues to increase as does the numbers of people who travel to other countries.
